The project was initiated and funded by a local businessman who had wished to introduce a 5 star hotel in Medan which had no existing international standard hotels. The lower half of the Hotel was the Office portion
which was leased out on the back of the reputation of the JW Marriott brand.
Security was a very important factor in the design which had incorporated emergency bollards to stop vehicles; the Ground Floor was elevated about 2 metres above road level and shielded with landscaping.
Security checks for vehicles and people were incorporated into the design. The importance of such security measures were realised when shortly after completion of this building there were Terrorist Bomb Attacks at
the Ritz Carlton & JW Marriott Hotels in Jakarta.
