Penang Island

CLIENT: CITY ATLAS SDN BHD

STAGE : COMPLETED IN 1999

This Hotel/Office project was completed in the midst of the Asian Financial Crisis and several suppliers and contractors were adversely affected.

The developer had no choice but to complete the building to avoid defaulting on the loans. Finishes and equipment had to be completely reviewed and budget was significantly reduced to ensure there were sufficient funds to complete the building. One of the more telling features was the use of air-con split units instead of a Chill Water System. These compressor units can be seen on the building façade.

The Hotel was vertically separated from the Office Tower; affording the Guest Rooms a view of the sea and the famous Gurney Drive Promenade. An Infinity Pool and a Spa were also located at the top of the Podium Block affording direct views to the sea. The proposed Pirate Ship & Wave Pool were omitted. The Proposed Aquarium below the Swimming Pool, with swimming sharks visible from the Street was never implemented.
